HIV/AIDS

The Malitaba HIV/AIDS Workplace Programme

Background

South Africa is presently engaged in its hardest battle yet: The war against HIV/AIDS. The statistics show a prevalence rate of 30% for women attending antenatal clinics and despite the stabilising of the epidemic; we are still yet to deal with its effects.
We have had some successes in this area, mainly in the NGO sector, but the question still remains: “What can we do?”
At the end of the Malitaba programme, which has five stages your workforce will be able to:

1. Understand HIV/AIDS, their risk and its implications
2. Have access to testing and care facilities
3. Access to a Peer Educator and Counsellor
4. Access to ongoing support within a safe and familiar environment
5. Information and support for the affected survivors
6. Track the progress of the programme

Aim

We aim to implement a workplace programme that is effective and sustainable. According to the World Health Organisation and other developing countries the following make up an effective HIV/AIDS programme:
  • Peer education programme
  • STD programme/referral service
  • Condom distribution programme
  • Media campaign
The strategy that follows takes into account the “best practice” models from around the world. The first phase aims to address misconceptions and stigmas on the work floor, through a performance and performers who look like and speak like the people they are addressing. This will allow people to ask questions in an environment that is non-threatening. Management will implement effective strategies during phase two.

The third phase will put into place the STD, media and condom programmes. This is effective, as people want information about sex, sexuality and behaviour change from their peers. This approach is hands-on and cost effective (you need not always import aid from outside). There will be one peer educator per ten employees, ensuring accessibility. If you have in house trainers, they will be trained and will implement PE. Coupled with this service comes phase four, as a large part of the population is already infected, it makes sense to have in house counsellors. People who will give emotional support to the infected and affected. Phase five allows you to track your progress.
