Being AWEH

I come from Eldorado Park. I have made it to a place in my life where I am proudly from Eldos as opposed to being Eldos. Eldos is where I come from. It is not who I am.

To over identify with your place of origin, is a comfort and comforting. All the labels are a convenient short-hand to understanding yourself and others understanding you (even if these labels are negative). When expanding your identity, you need to look at new labels. Labels which suit you better. You have to release the old and grow into the new. You create different dreams. Dreams that do not have a script. Dreams that require behaviours that will be judged. The fear of being without community can keep you small. The need to fit in can keep you and your dreams contained.

How can you be big enough to withstand the rejection of your community, while you still claim their identity? What does it take to live into your dreams, if they are indeed smaller and bigger than where you come from?

Borrowing from the streets, I say: “Be AWEH!”

Be ABLE, WILLING, EQUIPPED with HEART.

Being ABLE, is about knowing yourself. Knowing your strengths, weaknesses and constantly working your blindspots. Working your blindspots means striving to know what others know about you. Become aware of what you hide from others (don’t hide it from yourself as well) and be curious about what you know and what you don’t know. Living into your dreams means knowing your ABILITIES.

Be WILLING to turn your abilities into your fortune. Put in your 10 000 hours to turn your abilities into excellence.  Pay attention to the skills life hands to you. They make sure you are EQUIPPED for the position you hold and will hold. You will become equipped to deal with what life throws at you.

Finally, work from your heart space. Wherever you are, love yourself, love the people around you and love how you are using your abilities in your work.

Living in AWEHness means  living outside of your comfort zone. Realising that your comfort zone is no longer a comfort to you. Risk being an outsider so that your dreams catapult you from where you are, to where you have yearned to be.

AWEHness makes my life excellent.

Shap and Aweh!
